Baobab (Adansonia digitata) is a deciduous tree, coming from the dry parts of central Africa and appears mostly in tropical countries, principally as a component of secondary forests.

INTRODUCTION

From a nutritional point of view the most interesting part of baobab is the fruit. The pulp is contained in a very resistant external capsule named epicarp; the internal ripe fruit, endocarp, is split in small floury, dehydrated and powdery slices that enclose multiple seeds and filaments, the Red Funicles, that subdivide the pulp in segments. Red Funicles* have an impressive antioxidant capacity highest than other part from baobab and the other known antioxidant from natural and synthetic origin.*

PHYTOCHEMICALS

Chemicals analysis conducted on Red Funicles showed the presence of anthocyanins, gallic acid, tartaric acid, phenols and flavonoids. Moreover it is rich of nutritional compounds as proteins with high digestibility level, dietary fiber, starch, and sugar as sucrose, glucose and fructose. The red fiber is very low in fat.

PROPERTIES

Several investigations have been carried out in order to determine antioxidant capacity of red baobab fibers. For this purpose the most important techniques of analysis were used and all measures showed the high antioxidant power of Red Funicles.

APPLICATION

Baobab Red Funicles are useful as antioxidant for food and pharmaceutical formulations in place of traditional BHA and BHT. Moreover it can be employed in case of unbalance, to combat oxidative stress, to preserve good health, and it is a very valuable ingredient in supplementation to prevent photo-damage, photo and physiological aging, to prevent skin and hair diseases and to improve symptoms of inflammation.
