Baobab: A nutritous whole food
Baobab fruit pulp is a whole food, which is naturally dried on the baobab tree. The pulp contains very high amounts of vitamin C, and contains significant amounts of calcium (the absorption of which is aided by the vitamin C), as well as other vitamins and minerals. In addition, baobab is loaded with natural dietary fiber, both solubale and insoluble. This makes it a healthy whole fruit supplement, as well as helps to add texture to smoothies and other food mixes.
Baobab is a fruit from Africa. Baobab trees produce a fruit with a hard shell like a coconut.
Inside the hard shell are seeds, which are coated with whitish powder, which is the fruit pulp. The white globules seen in the following photograph are the pulp with a dark seed inside. The globules are surrounded by red fibers, whcih are very high in certain nutirents.
The commercial product is produced by mechanically seperating the seeds and red fibers from the baobab fruit pulp. The dried baobab fruit pulp is available for purchase to use as a nutritional supplement. The seed or seed and red fibers are used to make an extract oil, which is very good for dry skin. The following photograph shows commercial powder, a seed, a globule of pulp and a seed, and red fibers. Note that the pulp is dried naturally on the tree, resulting a ready to consume powder containing typically 8-12 % water.
The powder is easily water dispersable. It has a acidic, almost citrusy taste, which makes a good base for smoothies, can be sprinkled on fruit, etc. The fruit can be dispersed in water and drank as is, but some flavor addition would help.
